Charles A. Parsons

Charles A. Parsons Charles A. Parsons Charles A. Parsons Charles Algernon Parsons was born in London in 1854. His father, William Parsons, was the Third Earl of Rosse and a famous British astronomer who served as president of Englands Royal Society. The youngest of six sons, Parsons spent most of his boyhood at Birr Castle in Ireland, the familys estate. A naturally gifted student, Parsons was privately tutored by some of Englands most prominent scientists, including astronomer Sir Robert Hall. Parsons showed his mechanical genius at an early agein 1866, at age of 12, he and his brothers reportedly built a four-horsepower steam carriage that travelled at a speed of 10 mph.In 1871, Parsons was admitted to Trinity College in Dublin and later enrolled at St. Johns College in Cambridge, where he graduated with a first-class honors degree in mathematics in 1877. He quickly hired on with an engineering firm in Newcastle as an apprenticean unusually low-level position for someone of such hig h social standing. He later joined Kitson and Company in Yorkshire, where he helped design rocket-powered torpedoes.Diagram of Charles Algernon Parsons steam turbine. In 1884 Parsons took a job as director of electrical equipment development for Clarke, Chapman, and Company near Newcastle, a firm that designed and manufactured ship engines. It was here he invented the steam turbine engine. The turbine operated in a series of stages. During each stage, the expansion of the steam was restricted to the smallest possible extent, extracting as much kinetic energy as possible without allowing the turbine blades to turn too fast and damage the equipment. His invention was a breakthrough in electrical engineering and allowed electricity to be produced at much lower cost.Parsons founded his own company in Newcastle in 1889C.A. Parsons and Companyto manufacture turbo-generators. A few years later he fitted his turbine with a condenser for use in electric generating stations. He continued to re search marine propulsion, and in 1894, he applied for a patent for propelling a vessel by means of a steam turbine, which turbine actuates the propeller or paddle shaft directly or through gearing. The Turbina.Three years later Parsons built the Turbinia, a 100-foot long ship that was propelled with a steam turbine. The vessel was equipped with a double-ended water tube boiler working at 210 psi. Instead of a radial flow turbine, Parsons installed three parallel-flow turbines of different pressures to reuse the same steam in quick succession. Each turbine was connected to a separate shaft that drove three triple-bladed propellers. At a steam pressure of 157 psi, the central shaft turned at 2,000 rpm and the two wing shafts at 2,230 rpma new standard of efficiency. The Turbinia could travel at speeds as high as 34 knotsan extraordinary accomplishment for that time. During a review of Royal Navy ships at Queen Victorias Diamond Jubilee Fleet Review off the coast of Portsmouth, the Turb inia easily outmaneuvered and embarrassed the British fleet, which could only reach a maximum speed of 27 knots.Parsons multi-stage steam turbine quickly revolutionized marine transportation and naval warfare. Within a few years, several British destroyers were launched with Parsons turbines and turbine-powered passenger vessels were also in operation. By 1904, 26 ships had been equipped with Parsons remarkable direct-drive turbine engines, including the Titanic. His famous engine also became the standard for electric power generation on land.Parsons spent much of his free time working on new ideas and inventions. He experimented with gearing, telescopes, and even dabbled in chemistry with attempts to crystallize carbon. Among his other inventions is the auxetophone, a device that amplified stringed musical instruments. His important contributions to science were formally acknowledged when he was elected to the Royal Society in 1898 and knighted in 1911. During a vacation cruise in t he West Indies he collapsed and died from neuritis in 1931. A memorial service was later held at Westminster Abbey.Mark Crawford is an independent writer.Powered by three parallel flow turbines, the Turbinia could reach speeds as high as 34 knots- an extraordinary accomplishment for that time.

Improve Your Resume with These 5 Easy Steps

Improve Your Resume with These 5 Easy StepsImprove Your Resume with These 5 Easy StepsSo youve finally gotten your resume written. It may have taken you some time to write your resume although, in my experience, its mora about procrastination in getting started than it is about the actual time it takes to get a resume completed. It really doesnt take that long to write a resume, but it does take time to decide what to include and to organize the information in a logical fashion. Once your resume is written, step away from it for a day or some and then come back to it and see if theres a way that you can make any improvements. The reason resumes are so important is because they are the easiest way for an employer to get a snapshot of your skills and accomplishments. Employers need an easy way to weed out candidates and it is the resume that was designed for that purpose. A great resume is one where an employer can easily see your education, honors, and awards, relevant coursework, rel evant and additional experience, as well as special skills and co-curricular activities that youve accomplished. Resumes are professional documents. They provide employers with relevant information on which to base a decision on whom theyd like to interview and which of the applicants appear to be unqualified. Since the importance of writing a great resume cant be overlooked, taking the time to improve your resume is often all it takes to get an employer to take notice. I see many resumes over the course of each day and I often notice that there are usually some very easy ways that can dramatically improve a resume to help it stand out among the rest. Even though I do see a number of mistakes on resumes, oftentimes its not really a mistake per se but its more about what can be done to portray professional and academic experiences more effectively. Tips to Improve Your Resume Organize your resume to capture the most important information firstIf you are astudent still in college or a new graduate, include the Education section of your resume first. Since this is what youve been doing full-time over the course of the past several years, its important to have Education included at the very top of the resume followed by a Relevant Coursework or Relevant Experience section right below. Under each heading, you will then want to include the most recent experience first. Employers often skim resumes first to find the most qualified candidates prior to looking them over more carefully so when writing your resume be sure to highlight how you meet the specific qualifications of the internship or job. Finding a way to organize all of the information on a resume is often the most difficult part of the whole process. You may choose to include an Objective or Summary of Qualifications section above the Education section of your resume but, if you do, make sure you focus this section on the requirements of the job. Oftentimes the information from the Objective or Summary o f Qualifications can be most accurately communicated in the very first paragraph of a titelblatt letter. Highlight your qualificationsEvery resume should have a focus. When applying for an internship or job, it is your responsibility to fully understand the qualifications listed in the description and then organize your resume in a way that best highlights your skills and accomplishments and proves that you are the perfect candidate for the internship or the job. The easiest way to do this is to include a Relevant Experience section right after Education where you can list all of the coursework, volunteer, co-curricular and previous internship/job experience that is directly applicable to the internship or job. Don Asher, well-known speaker, and author, highly recommends using the format of Title, Organization, Location, and Dates for each experience listed on a resume. This format makes it easy for an employer to find the information they are looking for based on including the most important information first. Use bullet points to display important informationAlthough descriptions in a resume can be in paragraph or bullet form, using bullets makes it easier for employers to read and results in a much cleaner looking resume. Each bullet should begin with a strong action verb followed by a concise statement (eliminating all articles, a, an, the whenever possible) that further describes your specific skills and accomplishments.Include only relevant information and delete any clutterThe rule for professionals is to include the last 15 years or so of employment on a resume. For students and new graduates you will want to include the most relevant experience first and then, if theres room, you may want to also include your summer jobs working at a local restaurant or retail store to highlight your interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills that are also very important to employers. Try eliminating any extraneous experiences that do not directly relate to the internship or job, especially when you have relevant experience that is much more important to include on the resume. Think of your resume in terms of prime real estate that should include only the most relevant experience you have at that particular time. Make your resume error-freeIf there was ever a time when perfectionism is warranted, its when writing a resume or cover letter. Not only does correct spelling and grammar portray an educated candidate, it also shows the employer that you seriously want this position and that you are willing to take the time to do everything possible in order to get it. By improving your resume, you improve your results. Since resumes and cover letters are designed to get qualified candidates an interview, not taking the time to improve these documents can greatly impact the number of interviews you get. Since youve already taken the time it takes to write a resume, why not take the little bit of time it takes to improve it in order to get better results. jazzmusik up your job descriptions on your resume.

Time management is a waste of time. Focus on this instead

Time management is a waste of time. Focus on this insteadTime management is a waste of time. Focus on this insteadIt is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it. SenecaOnce upon a time, a very strong woodcutter asked for a job in a timber merchant and he got it. The pay was really good and so was the work condition. For those reasons, the woodcutter was determined to do his best.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHis anfhrer gave him an axe and showed him the area where he supposed to work. The first day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees.Congratulations, the boss said. Go on that wayVery motivated by the boss words, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he could only bring 15 trees. The third day he tried even harder, but he could only bring 10 trees. Day after day he was bringing less and less trees.I must be losing my strength, the woodcutter tho ught. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on.When was the last time you sharpened your axe? the boss asked.Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees(1)Managing Energy Versus Time Energy, not time, is the fundamental currency of high performance.Imagine this for a second- the trees in this short story represent your goals and the axe representsyou. What can we learn from this? The secret to high productivity that actually lasts is not managing time or working harder- its all about managing yourself, specificallyyour energy. We all have the same 24 hours every day. The main reason why some people achieve 10x more in any given day than fruchtwein people do in a month, is not because they manage time better- its because they manage their energy better. In the book,The Power Of Full Engagement, Jim Leohr and Tony Schwartz state that energy is broken down into these typesPhysical Patterns of breathin g, quality of sleep, when and what we eat, recovery and level of fitness.Emotional Managing levels of self-confidence, self-control, social skills, and empathy.Mental Appropriate mental preparation, visualization, positive self talk, effective time management, and creativity.Spiritual Character, passion, commitment, integrity, and honesty.(2)For example, after a night out boozing and little sleep the average person will most likely be less productive than otherwise- regardless of how well they planned to manage their time the next day.Time management also fails to take into account our natural cycles of energy throughout day i.eUltradian Rhythm.Just like a sprinter, we perform at our best when working in sprints (approx 90 minutes) and then taking breaks in-between intervals to rejuvenate our energy.Evidently, managing our energy plays a significant role in our short-term and long-term productivity.Lets explore some other reasons to focus on managing your energy instead of managing your time.Hi. Before we dive into the main course, Id like to give you a free eBook guide including the best practical ideas and proven science for building good habits and breaking bad ones. If youd like to learn these ideas on how to stick to your goals and stop procrastinating, you can download my free PDF guide Change Your Habitshere.1. Time management systems are inhumaneYes, someone had to say it and I just did.Time management may be a great system for a machine, but for the rest of us who are emotionally driven human beings- we need to take account for our energy levels.Plus your willpower and self-controlreduceswith every choice you make throughout the day.(3)Clearly, we perform at our best at different periods of the day.Time management fails to take into account these emotional, mental and energetic factors that make us human.SOLUTION Schedule around your energy levels not your time.Instead of scheduling around time, schedule around your energy and willpower levels. By mat ching the times of the day you have the most energy with your most important tasks, you can significantly improve your productivity. As a rule of thumb, schedule your most importantdominoand creative tasks at some point in the early hours of waking up when you have the most energy. On the flip side, you could schedule your low creative tasks i.e emails, social media, phone calls in the latter part of the day when your energy and willpower is lowest.Heres a quick example of scheduling around your energy levels, assuming you are an entrepreneur or a creative.Creative energy (best between 4 -11 a.m.)Social energy (best between 6 -11 p.m.)Communication energy (phone calls, email, texts) (best between 2-5 p.m.)Learning energy (any time except afternoon)Physical energy (exercise) (12pm-2pm)(4)2.Time management reduces happiness and creates anxietyTime management systems promote a ridiculously high standard of time efficiency and perfection that is simply unrealistic for any human being. This idea that weshouldmanage every millisecond to a tee is not only impossible, but it also puts an enormous amount of pressure on us.Whats worse is that we often feel guilty or anxious whenever tasks are incomplete or we have any free time whatsoever. No matter how much we cross off our to-do list there always seems to beMOREthings to get done. This anxiety buildup leads to more procrastination on our schedules and goals- apps and phone reminders dont help either, we just ignore them. This is why you may find yourself struggling to sleep, rolling in your bed past midnight worrying about things on your to-do list.Instead of relaxing and winding down at the end of the day to enjoy time with family and friends, youre overwhelmed and anxious. I know this too well, ive been there many times.SOLUTION Schedule regular downtimeIts counterintuitive that periodically spending time away from crossing off our endless to-do lists to instead recharge our energy, can be much more productive than other wise- but its true.(5)I have personally been through a phase where my obsession with time management and getting things done was causing massive anxiety, stress and chronic procrastination.I finally made a decision to sharpen the saw. Instead of filling up all my time blocks with productive work, I set aside regular time to simply do whatever I felt like in the moment- go for walk, watch TV shows etc. In other words, just be human.By doing this Ive been able to alleviate my performance anxiety and significantly improve my productivity.Shortly after doing this, Ive launched several projects, traveled to deliver two keynote speeches, created and delivered a half-day workshop, written and recorded 6+ articles and videos, built my personal network and so on.This is not to brag, but to inspire you to make time for regular downtime to recharge your energy.By doing so, you will practice letting go of control of the outcome and the obsession to be perfect with managing time, which in turn will help you become more productive.3. Time management is literally a waste of timeStop managing your time. Start managing your focus Robin SharmaWe spend all of our precious time planning, reading and plotting to manage our time.Instead of taking action to actually get things done, we delude ourselves into a false sense of achievement because we simply planned our day with a time management calendar or app.The irony is that this is a waste of time and often we dont actually get much done. In the end, execution is all that matters.Ive personally fallen into the trap of spending hours on time management that could have been spent actually being productive. What is more important is building a habit of consistent action which will, in turn, produce real results.SOLUTION Create Rituals That Match Your Peak Energy LevelsConsider these rituals of some of the most successful creatives and entrepreneursWarren Buffett wakes up at 645 am and begins the day by reading over newspapers and book s.Maya Angelou would arrive at 6.30 am to a rented local gasthaus room to write until 2 pm, and then go home afterward to do some editing.Richard Branson wakes up at 5 am, exercises and spends time with his family first thing every day before working on his business.Successful people dont have to manage time, they execute habitually when their energy levels are at their peak- allowing them to perform at their best consistently. You cancreate your own daily ritualsto help you stay productive regardless of whether or not you use any time management system.Your ritual can initially be as small as you need to help you simply get started and maintain consistency every day.RECAPI acknowledge that traditional time management allows for planning, but in truth, for the most part, they fail to account for crucial human factors that drive our productivity. Were not machines or robots, that can perform efficiently and perfectly 24 hours a day. Our emotions, energy, and willpower moves in cycles, plus we dont always perform at our best every day.Instead of focusing on time management, you can instead schedule your most important activities around your highest energy levels, schedule for regular downtime and create habitual rituals that you stick to consistently. In the end, you cant manage time per se, but you can manageyou. This article first appeared on Mayo Oshin.Mayo Oshin writes at MayoOshin.Com, where he shares the best practical ideas based on proven science and the habits of highly successful people for stress-free productivity and improved mental performance. 5 ways parents can help develop childrens talents

5 ways parents can help develop childrens talents5 ways parents can help develop childrens talentsSome people think talent is born. The often-told story of Mozart playing piano at 3 and composing at 5 reinforces such beliefs. But zu siches the rest of that story Mozarts fatherbei welches a successful musician, composer and instructor. He was devoted to teaching Mozart and helping him practice hard and achieve perfection.Despite all this, Mozart did not produce his first masterwork until his early 20s after about 15 years of arduous practice and top-notch instruction.Talent, I argue, is not born, its made and parents can make a big difference.Conditions for successAlthough some might believe that talent is rare, psychologist Benjamin Bloom said otherwise after he investigated top performers in six talent domains What any person in the world can learn, almost all persons can learn if provided with the appropriate conditions of learning. Those appropriate conditions include five things an early start, expert instruction, deliberate practice, a center of excellence, and singleness of purpose.Children cant ignite and stoke these talent factors on their own. Instead, as I argue in my 2019 book, Nurturing Childrens Talents A Guide for Parents, children need a talent manager, most often a parent, to nurture talent growth. I make this case as an educational psychologist who specializes in learning and talent development.Lets take a closer look at these talent factors and parents influence.1. Early startThe seeds of talent are usually planted early and in the home. One study revealed that 22 of 24 talented performers from chess players to figure skaters were introduced to their talent domains by parents, usually between ages 2 and 5.Many phenoms get an early start, research shows.Purino from www.shutterstock.comSome of those parents were elite performers or coaches themselves. One was national championship volleyball coach John Cook, who raised All-American volleyball star Lauren Cook.I think my daughter had an advantage because of my job, coach Cook said. She grew up around volleyball. When she was a little kid, we set up a mini court in the basement and would play volleyball on our knees. Some parents were not linked to the childs eventual talent area but provided a nurturing early environment that sparked a talent interest. Such was the case for Adora Svitak, an accomplished child writer and presenter.Adora published two books by age 11 and made hundreds of international presentations, including a TED Talk viewed by millions. Adoras parents, John and Joyce, were not writers or presenters, but they set the stage for Adoras accomplishments. As her mother describes, they read interesting and fascinating books to her for more than an hour each night. Reading really helped shape Adoras love for learning and reading, she said.In addition, they encouraged Adoras early writing, offered guidance, helped her publish her books and arranged speaking engage ments. Joyce eventually quit her job to manage Adoras career. She said, It is a full-time job, and it can be hard. But, I dont just manage somebody I manage my daughter.2. Expert instructionParents go to great lengths to provide or arrange expert instruction. Chess grandmaster Kayden Troff learned how to play chess at age 3 while observing his father, Dan, and older siblings play. With few chess resources near their Utah home, Dan assumed chess-coaching duties. To do so, Dan studied chess 10 to 15 hours a week during lunch breaks and after hours. He read books, watched videos, and studied grandmaster games that allowed him to create a book with specialized lessons to instruct Kayden during nightly training sessions. Eventually, when Dan could no longer keep pace with Kaydens growth, he arranged for Kayden to take lessons from grandmasters via the internet. To pay for lessons costing US$300 a month, Dan, a banker, and his wife worked extra jobs as custodians and spent 400 hours organizi ng an annual chess camp.3. Deliberate practicePractice among the talented is never casual, its deliberate goal-directed and beyond ones comfort zone.State high school swim champion Caroline Thiel described her taxing practice routine this waySome days in practice youre just so exhausted. Youre sore and your entire body aches, and its hard to find motivation. Your brain shuts down but your body keeps going through the muscle aches, heavy breathing and throwing up. People dont realize how hard swimmers practice they think we just jump in the pool and swim a few laps.Becoming a champion swimmer takes arduous practice.Kekyalyaynen from www.shutterstock.com4. Center of excellenceWhen I asked Jayde Atkins, a national high school rodeo champion, why she is so talented, she said, Look at all I have, I should be good. Jayde was raised on a horse ranch in central Nebraska and began riding at age 2.Her parents, Sonya and J.B., are riders and professional horse trainers who taught her the ropes and practiced with her for hours each day. The Atkins had well-bred horses and a big trailer to transport them to nearby towns for rodeo competitions. The family ranch was a self-made center of rodeo excellence. Most talented performers do not have a center of excellence outside their back door. In those cases, they may travel to get to one. Consider three tennis players from Lincoln, Nebraska, my hometown. With their parents blessing and support, Jon and Joel Reckewey left home as teenagers and moved three hours away to Kansas where they trained at the prestigious Mike Wolf Tennis Academy.Wimbledon and U.S. Open doubles champion Jack Sock traveled weekly to that same tennis academy as a boy before his entire family eventually relocated to Kansas. With parents support, budding stars often gravitate to centers of excellence, where top coaches and rising stars flock.5. Singleness of purposeTalented people display a singleness of purpose. One chess parent I interviewed told me, The extr aordinary time we put toward this one activity takes him out of a lot of fun and games. Another parent said, Hes not interested in school hes interested in chess. He just lives and breathes chess. That same parent said, We once took chess away (because of low school performance) and he was miserable. It was like yanking out the soul. When I asked chess parents why their children dedicate themselves to chess the way they do, they were unanimous about how much joy and satisfaction their children got from pursuing chess.Parents support this singleness of purpose. However, on occasion, they may find themselves supporting more than one passion. For instance, McKenzie Steiner is an all-state softball player and rising country music star. Her father, Scott, was McKenzies longtime softball coach, logging thousands of hours a year on the diamond and practicing pitching in the backyard, and also serving as her country band assembler, promoter and manager.Talent journeyAlthough stories of pushy parents abound, the parents I spoke with recognize that children must drive the talent train with passion and hard work and that parents can only help keep the train on track. They helped because they saw a need that only they could meet. They would no sooner ignore a talent need than a medical need. And, of course, they help because they love their children and want them to be fulfilled.Kenneth A. Kiewra, Professor of Educational Psychology, University of Nebraska-LincolnThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Read the original article.
